Stella B. Bixby

Stella B. Bixby of Riverhead died Oct. 10 at her home. She was 87.

Born Dec. 9, 1923, to Mary (Lipka) and Michael Kruel, she was a “Rosie the Riveter” during World War II, working in a plant that produced munitions and war supplies.

She married George L. Bixby on Nov. 18, 1945, and was a greenhouse worker for over 20 years at Ivy Acres Inc. wholesale growers in Calverton.

Ms. Bixby was a longtime member of the Altar Rosary Society at St. Isidore R.C. Church in Riverhead. Family members said she enjoyed gardening, knitting, crocheting and sewing.

She is survived by her husband; her children, Carol Marrin of Hampton Bays and George, of Brooklyn; and two grandchildren.

Visiting hours are scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 12, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.  at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A service will be held Thursday, Oct. 13, at 9:30 a.m. at St. Isidore R.C. Church, followed by interment at St. John the Evangelist Cemetery in Riverhead.
